As we began preparing to start our family, we bought an 1845 farmhouse in Upstate New York to be a weekend getaway where we could enjoy gardening, hiking, swimming and some day put up a swing set. We’ve spent the last four years completely restoring the house to get it ready for a child. In fact, there’s even a bedroom already waiting for him or her. We’ve stripped all of the paint ourselves so a child could crawl on the floor or even lick the walls (it could happen!) and be fine...we know, Sadie does it all the time. The backyard is fenced in, making it the perfect playground for our child. We spend most of our holidays there, especially Christmas, since we love to put up a big tree and run around in the snow enjoying our family during that special time of year.
In 2008, we also moved from Manhattan just a few miles north to Tarrytown in Westchester County. Tarrytown is a small town right on the Hudson River, which means that all of the great things that New York offers, like museums, zoos, and the arts, are still nearby, but Tarrytown is more like the towns we grew up in, with safe streets, parks to play in, great schools, and lots of other kids. We live in an apartment on the 3rd floor of a great old home with two big bedrooms, one for us and one for our child.
